Josef Průša was part of the RepRap project, the open-source effort to build printers that could print their own parts, and in 2012 he designed the first Prusa i3. His company, Prusa Research in Prague, grew from there into one of the biggest printer makers in the world, with about a thousand staff by 2024. The i3 line runs through the MK3 of 2017, the MK3S+ of 2020, the MK4 of 2023 and the MK4S of 2024. Prusa's habit that matters most to a used buyer is the upgrade kit. It sells kits that take an MK3S+ to an MK3.5S, MK3.9S or MK4S, an MK4 to an MK4S, and a MINI to a MINI+, so an older Prusa is rarely a dead end. The firmware is open source, and the printers keep statistics, including total print time, in their menus. Since 2023 Prusa has stepped back from fully open designs on its newest machines.
