Prusa XL
Prusa showed the XL in November 2021 and began shipping single-tool printers in March 2023, with multi-tool versions after. It's Prusa's big machine, a 360 mm cube CoreXY, and the party piece is the tool changer. Up to five Nextruder toolheads park at the back, and the printer picks up whichever one the print needs, so a five-color print doesn't waste filament purging one nozzle. The bed is split into 16 heated tiles that warm only the area a print uses, and a load cell in the toolhead sets the first layer. XLs were sold with one, two or five tools, and Prusa sells kits to add more, so count the tools in the photos. Prusa replaced it with the XL+ in 2026 and sells an upgrade kit.

Printer check
Hours, hotend, bed and firmware
- Print hours
- The XL keeps total print time under LCD Menu, Info, Print Statistics, along with tool changes and filament per tool, though not hours per tool. Photos of those screens are the place to start.
- Hotend and nozzle
- Each tool is a Nextruder with a metal filament guide and no PTFE tube. The original XL shipped with a 0.6 mm nozzle preinstalled. Ask how many tools it has and for a photo of each nozzle.
- Bed and levelling
- The heatbed is split into 16 tiles of 9 x 9 cm, each heated separately so it only warms what a print uses, and a load cell in the toolhead handles the first layer. Ask for a photo of a print that uses the whole bed, which shows every tile works.
- Belts, rails and screws
- It's a CoreXY with a tool changer that picks tools up on a kinematic coupler and calibrates their alignment automatically. Ask the seller to run a multi-tool print. Clean color changes with layers lined up mean the alignment is right.
- Firmware and account
- It runs Prusa's open-source Buddy firmware. On version 6.4.0 or later, the Ownership transfer reset clears the seller's network and Prusa Connect settings but keeps statistics, so ask for that before it ships.
- Enclosure and add-ons
- Prusa sells an official enclosure, toolhead upgrade kits to add tools later, and since August 2026 a kit that upgrades an XL to the new XL+. Check how many tools are fitted against the listing.
- Spare parts
- Prusa's shop has an XL spare-parts section, with extruder plates, parking plates, carriage plates, the xLCD set and nozzles. Prusa replaced the XL with the XL+ in 2026, but XL parts are still listed.
- Shipping and packaging
- Prusa publishes an official guide to packing the XL in its original packaging. A printer this size really needs that box, so ask whether the seller kept it.

Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. A missing sheet, add-on or power supply should come off the price.
What to check
The XL has no documented defect that we found. What matters is the tool count, that every heatbed tile heats, and that the tools line up on a multi-color print.
- 01Tool count: Count the toolheads and docks in the photos. Single, two- and five-tool XLs were all sold, so match it to the listing.
- 02Print statistics: Ask for a photo of LCD Menu, Info, Print Statistics. It shows total print time and tool changes.
- 03Multi-tool print: Ask for a photo of a recent multi-color print. Layers that line up with clean color changes mean tool alignment is right.
- 04Heatbed: Ask for a photo of a print that covers most of the bed. Even adhesion everywhere means all 16 tiles heat.
- 05Power supplies: Check every power supply is in the photos. A five-tool XL needs three.
- 06XL or XL+: Ask whether it's been upgraded to XL+. An upgraded printer should show the new parts and firmware.
- 07Packing: Ask whether it'll ship in Prusa's original packaging. A printer this size shouldn't travel without it.

§ Oct 19, 2026Four XLs are for sale and only one quotes shipping, so the $1,800 to $3,900 band is just asks before freight. The assembled five-tool one at $3,900 is where we'd look first. Count the toolheads and docks against the title, and on a five-tool XL check for all three power supplies. Ask whether the seller kept Prusa's original packaging, since a printer this size should travel in it.
